The Pen and Pulpit is a journal of things well said, of things well written. That is to say, the Pen and Pulpit is a journal of eloquence—but the sort of eloquence that can be had by simple folk, like an uneducated tinker dreaming in prison, or a clumsy barefoot monk washing pots and pans to the glory of God. This eloquence is a melding of truth and beauty of expression, yielded to the service of Christ. And this eloquence packs a punch—thousands of souls have been fed and watered by these delicious words.
The Pen and Pulpit is old. Thanks to our copyright laws just about anything we publish in the P&P is old—but no less true or beautiful for the wear. Still, being old, some of it is hard to read at first (remember how you wrestled with Shakespeare for a while before you got the hang of it? and remember how it was worth it once you did?). So the P&P will add an introduction and a few notes here and there to help.
The Pen and Pulpit is small. So small that it fits on the nightstand or on your desk next to your Bible and the Redeemer Book of Hymns, or even in the glove box—any place where you set apart a few minutes each day to be alone with God and whet your appetite for him. Each P&P will conclude with questions to focus your own reflection, questions that might make for good discussion if you use the Pen and Pulpit in a small group or family devotions.
The Pen and Pulpit is but a taste. Because the P&P is small, each issue may be only an excerpt from a masterpiece, or one sermon of a series. The idea is to introduce you to the masters of the faith, so that you might meet a new friend and mentor whose writing will spur you further up and further in, closer to Christ our Lord. And that—a palpable closeness to Jesus—is our dream.
